Tiscali has secured a major coup by signing a deal to add Premier League football to its service.

The UK's fourth biggest broadband provider has struck a deal with Setanta, the Irish-owned broadcaster, to show live games on its cable television service. It will also broadcast games online.

In signing the agreement, Tiscali increases its status as a key player in the home entertainment industry, with many big names, such as BT, Virgin Media and Carphone Warehouse also offering live football games in their packages. Setanta broke the Sky TV monopoly on live top-division games when it won a bidding race for 46 live games last year.

Tiscali has yet to comment on the joint venture but managing director Neal McCleave told Reuters in January: "A tie-up [with Setanta] is a potential. If we can get the right deal at the right price, we would be looking to do it."

On Friday, Tiscali announced the acquisition of rival broadband company Pipex, in a deal worth £210 million. The purchase will increase Tiscali's customer base by 500,000.
