Telecommunications and broadband provider Tiscali could double its customer numbers following the purchase of some of Pipex's divisions.

The firm, which recently bought Pipex's broadband and voice divisions for £210 million, will benefit from 570,000 new broadband customers and 650,000 voice clients as part of the acquisition.

"We will be able to offer our new Pipex customers the full range of Tiscali's compelling and innovative services including broadband, telephone and TV," said the company's chief executive Mary Turner.

She added that the acquisition would also give the firm greater opportunity to roll out its double and triple play services.

Tiscali was recently ranked in third place by Epitiro in a report which looked at internet performance.

Various factors were taken into consideration - including speed and delivery – and the firm was placed third for its technical performance. Broadband provider BT took first place, with Demon scoring above Tiscali to make second place.
