Internet service provider Tiscali has cemented its position as the fourth most popular broadband provider in the UK after adding an extra 70,000 customers in the second quarter of 2007.
Tiscali announced its half-yearly financial results yesterday, which saw the Italian-owned broadband company officially reach 1.55 million UK customers, currently behind BT, Virgin Media and the Carphone Warehouse.
However, since the end of the last financial quarter in June, Tiscali has completed the acquisition of rival ISP Pipex for £210 million, adding an estimated 500,000 customers to Tiscali's total. Tiscali therefore estimates its total UK customer base to be "over 1.9 million".
A statement from Tiscali said: "The acquisition of Pipex's broadband and voice division further cements Tiscali's position as a fully integrated telecom and media operator in the top league of the UK market."
The company posted pre-tax profits of 22.4 million (£15.4 million) for the first six months of the year.
