Watchdog tells off telecoms firms

Two broadband providers have been accused by the industry regulator of violating billing rules.

Talk Talk and its subsidiary Tiscali have been told by Ofcom that it has so far received more than 1,000 complaints about bills for services that have already been cancelled.

Commenting on the matter, Ofcom's director of consumer affairs Claudio Pollack said: "Our investigation into Talk Talk and Tiscali UK found that they had billed customers for cancelled services; this is unacceptable which is why we have ordered them to clean up their act or face the consequences."

Both of the companies could face a fine of ten per cent of relevant turnover if they do not address the bills by December 2nd.

Talk Talk has said that it has already taken steps to sort out the issue, which it blamed on delays in integrating the two companies' databases.

It commented: "We are resolving this by migrating all ex-Tiscali customers onto one network and billing system which will allow us to process cancellations much more effectively."

Ofcom has recently chastised broadband providers in the UK for failing to automatically refund unused consumer credits following a cancellation of services.

According to its report, providers in the UK owe households nearly £10 million in unused credits.
