Broadband as important as road and rail, report finds

Is having a broadband connection as important to your business as having access to decent railways and roads?
If so you could find yourself among the majority of UK businesses who highlighted the importance of a quality broadband connection in a recent survey.
The study, carried out by Virgin Media Business, questioned 5,000 organisations around the UK and found that 30 per cent of the respondents chose broadband, rail and road access respectively as things that are "critical" to their business.
This could encourage a number of the country's business owners to compare the current deals on offer by various providers to ensure they are getting the connection speeds they require for a price they can afford.
Andrew McGrath, executive director of commercial for Virgin Media Business, said: "Global figureheads from prime ministers to leading business owners have identified better communications infrastructure … as the linchpin for improving the global economy.
"This survey highlights that the issue is still at the forefront of the boardroom agenda and highlights the very real need for businesses to step away from legacy infrastructure towards a faster future."
The comments follow the news that the coalition government has pushed back its deadline for achieving a national roll-out of 2Mbps broadband across the UK.
Under the Labour administration the target was for all homes and businesses to have access to such speeds.
However, the new coalition has now said that 2015 is a more realistic target.
