Illegal downloaders 'to get letters'

Illegal downloaders 'to get letters' Broadband customers who use their connections to illegally share music files could receive a letter from trade body the BPI, as it bids to protect music rights management.

The news comes as it was revealed by the body that it had contacted broadband provider Virgin Media about 800 of its customers accused of sharing copyrighted material.

Virgin Media now plans to write to those customers, reports the BBC.

Although the letters will act as a warning to the users that they are taking part in an illegal practice, the BPI has asked that repeat offenders are cut off, with the threat of suing internet service providers who do not co-operate with its policy.

Music lovers can use a range of services to download tracks legally via their broadband connection, with digital music service Rhapsody recently revealing it was to add to consumer choice by selling MP3 tracks with no copy restrictions.
