Mobile broadband firms drop "free" from advertising
Three major providers of mobile broadband have decided not to use the word "free" in their advertising for mobile broadband and laptop packages.
The Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4u and Three feared that the laptop giveaways could be misinterpreted by consumers, given that a service contract costing between £20 and £30 each month needed to be taken out, reports ISP Review.
Despite no active investigations by Trading Standards, the pre-emptive move is intended to prevent any problems in the future.
The Carphone Warehouse has since changed its offer, saying that the laptop computer is "included" in the deal.
In related news, a recent study by broadband.co.uk found that in real terms, Be Broadband and Virgin Media offered the fastest broadband speeds.
While Be had the edge overall, Virgin was found to be the faster of the two in the evenings or late at night. Both internet service providers came in with speeds in excess of six Mbps.
