More people than ever are turning to the type of technology provided by companies like Sky, Virgin Media and BT Vision, according to a new study.
Although the companies offer a host of broadband internet options, the Ofcom survey revealed it is also the digital video recorders included in their combined packages that are proving popular.
The Digital Progress Report showed the companies are among the providers of the 8.9 million such devices that are now sat in UK homes, giving television watchers the option to pause, store and rewind live programming.
It was advised that take-up for these services has seen an increase of almost one million in the last quarter, contributing to the five million Sky customers with a Sky+ service, 2.6 million Freeview watchers and 600,000 Virgin Media V+ subscribers.
A further 600,000 homes were found to have BT Vision and Top Up TV to hand and it was noted that out of all the people with digital video recorders in their living rooms, 1.9 million now had access to high definition (HD) channels.
"BSkyB reported that its customer base grew by 80,000 to over 9.3 million households in the UK and Ireland during the quarter. This is up by 430,000 subscribers year-on-year," the report added.
It went on to point out that 19 per cent of Sky customers have one or more extra TVs in their home connected via the Multiroom service.
This week, Virgin Media subscribers were told they could expect a new on-demand movie offering called PictureBox that allows them to pick from one of 28 different films from the Universal back catalogue.
