Superfast broadband demand creates more Virgin jobs
Thursday 9th February 2012, by Harry Wallis
Demand for Virgin Media's superfast broadband deals and its TiVo platform has created more jobs at the firm.
These new recruits will be added to the broadband provider's workforce across the coming weeks, with the positions situated in a variety of locations throughout the UK.
The majority of the vacancies will be based in Manchester and Swansea. In total, 500 customer service positions will be based in call centres, where new workers will be trained over a period of six weeks.
These new recruits will be educated about Virgin Media's products, while being taught the skills necessary to provide exceptional customer service.
As well as this, Virgin Media is looking for 120 engineers, who will be trained as part of its apprenticeship scheme, which has now entered its fourth year after bringing 530 workers to the firm.
The programme runs for a period of one year, allowing those taking part to begin working towards the business' recognised National Vocational Qualification in Communication Technology.
It is hoped that the accreditation will lead to an improved experience for customers.
Paul Buttery, chief customer and networks officer, said: "The new jobs that we've announced today will ensure we’re meeting the increasing demand for our next generation digital products and will help our customers get the kind of service they expect from a Virgin company."
Mr Buttery noted that the investment will benefit a number of communities across the country in an effort to provide young people with a start to their careers in the tough economic climate.
The high demand for superfast broadband could be set to increase further, after a survey by Eurostat found that 83 per cent of UK residents have internet accessibility.
This figure is significantly higher than Bulgaria and Romania, where internet coverage percentages were found to be 45 per cent and 47 per cent respectively.
