Virgin Media today became the latest company to enter the mobile broadband market.

The provider's first ever mobile broadband package costs £15 a month and comes with a free USB modem. Included in the price is 3GB of data, which the company claimed is enough for 100 hours of internet access and 2,000 emails.

All customers will be required to take out an 18-month contract, although those who also opt to sign up for Virgin Media's XL home broadband package will receive the mobile service free for three months.

Neil Berkett, chief executive officer for Virgin Media, suggested some customers would find using a single provider convenient.

"The launch of our mobile broadband product means UK consumers can now get all of their broadband needs from the UK's leading broadband expert," said Mr Berkett.

He added: "Virgin Media already provides the fastest broadband in the UK over our fibre-optic network and now customers can enjoy our broadband both at home and when on the move."

The provider has also struck a deal which will see The Carphone Warehouse sell its home broadband service, reports Mobile Today.

Under the terms of the agreement the retailer will promote Virgin Media's premium fixed-line broadband package.

The £49.99 a month deal comes with a free laptop and includes XXL broadband, together with XL television channels and XL phone.

Virgin Media has run a high-profile advertising campaign for its broadband service this year, pushing the idea that its fibre-optic network gives customers access to much higher speeds than those available from other providers.

However, it was censured by the Advertising Standards Authority for some of the claims it made about download speeds.
