Virgin Media 100Mb broadband is imminent

Thursday 25th February 2010, by Daniel King

Leading UK broadband provider Virgin Media has announced its state-of-the-art 100Mb internet will be available from the end of 2010.

It believes its revolutionary service will be 24 times faster than the average broadband speed offered by its rivals.

The 100Mb connection is designed to be Virgin Media's "flagship product" in a new and varied range of broadband services, the firm states.

People who sign up to receive the 100Mb broadband will typically be able to download a music album in five seconds and a high-definition movie in seven minutes and 25 seconds.

Virgin Media's chief executive officer Neil Berkett says: "There is nothing we can't do with our fibre optic cable network and the upcoming launch of our flagship 100Mb service will give our customers the ultimate broadband experience.

"Just as we led the way by launching the UK's first ever next generation service, we want to keep giving our customers the very best broadband available."

Mr Berkett goes on to add that 100Mb broadband being offered by Virgin Media will be a "historic moment" and one which will elevate the UK to the elite list of broadband-using countries.

Virgin Media is already piloting a 200Mb broadband scheme, which would be used to carry out tasks that require high speeds - such as downloading high-definition television programmes on-demand and using home videoconferencing technology.

The telecommunications company earlier this week announced it is to start offering mobile broadband travel passes, which would give tourists access to broadband from abroad for £10 a day.
