Virgin Media brings TiVo to the UK

Virgin Media broadband users who also subscribe to the internet service provider's (ISP) television and phone package may see some changes soon, following the announcement of a new technological partnership.
It was revealed this week that the company has struck a deal with TiVo Inc that could see new set-top box systems coming to the UK which are put together with the latter's digital video recording expertise.
The strategic partnership will allow the group to develop the future of the Virgin Media service and utilise converged broadband and TV technologies to create a new high-definition product.
Neil Berkett, chief executive officer of the ISP in the UK, said the company had selected TiVo due to its "proven track record of innovation" as well as its existing products and experience in the sector.
"The superiority of our fibre optic network combined with TiVo's capabilities, will allow us to offer consumers the most significantly advanced and compelling TV service available in the UK," he added.
Virgin Media also announced this week that it had begun the roll-out of new on-demand advertising through its digital set-top boxes - meaning users could now have more say in the marketing that lands on their screen.
Commercials from firms like L'Oreal, Sony Ericsson, Kelloggs and Microsoft will initially be accessible to 300,000 homes - expanding to cover more of the 37 million households served by Virgin Media in due course.
Cindy Rose, executive director of TV at the network, said it was clear that the more relevant advertising can be to the viewer, the more impacting it can be.
