Virgin Media chief steps down

Virgin Media chief steps down Virgin Media chief executive Steve Birch is to step down from his job with immediate effect, the cable broadcaster announced today.

The company has said Birch has left his post citing "family and personal reasons" and a search for a replacement will begin immediately.

Birch joined NTL in January 2006 and was integral in the merger with rival cable operator Telewest, the acquisition of Virgin Mobile and the transformation of the company through its Virgin Media rebranding. The company has said Neil Berkett, Virgin Media's chief operating officer, will step into the position until a successor is found.

Chairman Jim Mooney said: "Steve has contributed significantly to the transformation of Virgin Media. Since he joined us, the company has emerged as the UK's only quad-play provider and a genuinely distinctive presence in the world of communications and entertainment."

Last month, Virgin Media, whose largest shareholder is Sir Richard Branson, was put up for sale with a number of private equity companies reportedly interested in the company.
