Virgin Media collaborates with The Cube in broadband market

Friday 11th November 2011, by Harry Wallis

Virgin Media has collaborated with The Cube to develop new services that could boost the quality of broadband deals available in the market.

The Cube is a start-up incubator situated in East London's Silicon Roundabout, where people can test and develop products using superfast broadband, next generation digital entertainment and business services technology.

Through the help of entrepreneurs, tech start-ups and experts from across Virgin Media, the collaboration hopes to evolve superfast connectivity by introducing new applications and services.

It is expected that the work will explore the possibilities of Virgin Media's new TiVo Service, as well as its line-up of innovative apps, while developing ground-breaking consumer mobile platforms.

As part of the work, Virgin Media's marketing, technology, commercial and business teams will hold seminars and workshops at The Cube to share their knowledge with the community.

From this month onwards, The Cube will start to trial a secure business-grade internet connection from Virgin Media Business. The location will also offer 1Gbps internet access on a flexible basis to its members.

The trial will extend throughout next year and will be provided to The Cube at no cost. Also, the incubator will explore a range of commercial models and package the service to ensure that users can benefit from superfast connections.

Dale Barnes, director of advanced technology and innovation at Virgin Media, said: "The start-up community has a lot to offer to British business and, with technology and innovation at its heart, our partnership with The Cube gives us a fresh, informed and alternative point of view on how to take our products and services forward."

News of Virgin Media's new collaboration comes after the Superfast Cornwall initiative won the project of the year accolade at the World Communication Awards.

The scheme was launched last year between BT, European Regional Development Fund, Convergence, Cornwall Council and Cornwall Development Company.
