Virgin Media confirms 200 mbps broadband
Virgin Media has confirmed it will offer broadband speeds of up to 200 mbps by 2012.
Neil Berkett, Virgin Media's chief executive, made the announcement as company figures showed a total loss of 19,500 customers in April, May and June.
However, it managed to add 54,600 broadband users to its subscriber list.
He stated: "BT is talking about 40 mbps in 2012; we have got 50 mbps now and by 2012 we would have the technical capability of delivering up to 200 mbps per second.
"We are leading next generation access in this country."
Last month, BT announced that it was investing in a fibre optic data network in time for the 2012 London Olympics.
Days later, there were rumours in the press that Virgin Media was already planning a much more ambitious project.
Virgin Media's recent decision to switch off the analogue TV service over the next two years will free up capacity, thereby giving the cable company some room to increase broadband speeds.
