Virgin Media makes broadband promise

Tuesday 4th August 2009, by Daniel King

Virgin Media has promised customers that although it will endeavour to provide the best possible broadband speeds, it will not claim to offer services that are "unachievable" for its non-cable subscribers.

The network said today (August 4th) it could guarantee UK users absolute transparency as part of its move to improve internet connections across the nation - and this would include advertising for its ADSL products.

Following the publication of a recent Ofcom report, which revealed most operators were making promises they could not keep, the network explained it was keen to make sure people knew exactly where they stood.

It added all future marketing for Virgin Media ADSL broadband would have a maximum up-to speed that is accurate to the capabilities of technology available - something it claims it will be able to back up if necessary.

Chief executive of the group Neil Berkett commented: "Many consumers are confused by speed claims that are at best misleading and at worst disingenuous. I hope our National Broadband Speed Promise will help people choose the product that’s right for them."

He added that further to this, the move could also encourage other internet service providers to be more transparent when it comes to what speeds their packages were capable of.

Graeme Oxby, managing director for national broadband at Virgin Media, added recent technological upgrades would also mean better speeds at no extra cost for its existing clients.

The Ofcom study revealed the network's up to ten Mbit/s service was giving UK users somewhere between 8.1 and to 8.7 Mbit/s on average.
