Virgin Media 'making strides' toward 400Mbps broadband

Monday 28th June 2010, by Daniel King

Virgin Media has revealed it has high hopes for the future roll-out of a 400 megabytes per second (Mbps) service.

The company has been talking up the prospect of providing each and every one of its customers with the product, which would run at a faster speed than BT's quickest offering by a factor of four, ZDNet UK reports.

Despite the cable operator refusing to state the roll-out will definitely come to fruition, it remarked its next generation customer premise equipment will be able to cater for such a prospect.

A spokesperson from the organisation told the news provider: "We are making moves to make sure our equipment is capable of 400 Mbps."

The specialist added: "We are not saying we are looking at 400 Mbps, but that our equipment is prepared for the future."

It is the first instance in which the firm has strongly indicated its plans for a 400 Mbps service and it is a move to step-up its battle against BT for super-fast broadband, the source observed.

The enterprise had previously announced it is testing out 200 Mbps packages in Ashford, while also trialling a second operation in Coventry after the culmination of the World Cup.

In moves to expand its network, the representative revealed the operator aims to cover an additional 500,000 homes by laying cable to households close to its footprint and looking at the properties that were not considered when the network escalated in the early 1990s.

A survey recently released by analyst firm Satmetrix found Virgin Media and Sky to be among the favourite broadband providers for UK customers.
