Virgin Media now available to one-third of Britain
Monday 7th November 2011, by Harry Wallis
A third of Britain can now use Virgin Media's 100Mb broadband deals, just a year after the firm started to roll out the technology.
Properties in Harborne, Lincoln, Greater London and Solihull will now be able to experience the broadband provider's faster services, with the company now hoping to complete the expansion across half of its network by the middle of 2012.
Accelerated demand for faster broadband has been reported by Virgin Media, as 178,300 more households were paying for 30Mb connections or faster in the three months preceding the end of September 2011.
In total, 54 per cent of the firm's new customers wanted the aforementioned speeds, representing a record proportion. Also, the business now has more than half a million customers registered to services that are 30Mb or above.
Jon James, Virgin Media’s executive director of broadband, announced that the company was extremely proud to reach another milestone in its broadband history by leading the UK's development of next generation infrastructure.
However, Mr James warned that the broadband industry must deliver on its marketing claims in order for the sector to progress.
He explained: "One month after broadband companies were told to only advertise speeds that at least one in ten of its customers might get, there remain too many adverts which don’t meet even that low threshold. The new guidance was welcome but we publish the typical real world speeds our customers get."
Mr James added that not publishing the typical speeds that customers receive tarnishes the broadband industry's reputation.
Last week, BT released its latest statistics, which showed that the broadband provider has beaten its performance expectations for the year so far.
In the three months to September 30th, it witnessed a 46 per cent increase in the number of customers choosing its broadband services when compared to the same period last year.
