Virgin Media reports soaring customer base

Thursday 29th July 2010, by Daniel King

More than half a million consumers have signed up to Virgin Media's 20Mb or 50Mb service, the company has announced.

Virgin said that some 650,000 people in the UK now subscribe to its cable broadband, which represents a 43 per cent rise on last year.

The figures come as part of the company's second quarter results, which reveal that the organisation enjoyed revenues of £964 million between April and June.

According to the group, this is the strongest revenue growth it has witnessed since its merger four years ago.

More than 28,000 people signed up to Virgin's broadband services in this period, bringing its total customer base to 4.21 million.

"The latest data from Ofcom, the independent UK communications regulator, published July 27, 2010, shows our 10Mb and 20Mb services deliver more than twice the speeds of our competitors," the firm said in a statement.

"Our 50Mb service is already the fastest widely available broadband in the UK and we are on track to launch a 100Mb cable service in the fourth quarter. In addition, we continue to trial 200Mb downstream and 20Mb upstream speeds on our cable platform."

Earlier this week, Virgin announced it has teamed up with Surf Telecoms to trial ultrafast broadband in a Welsh village.

Residents of Crumlin, near Caerphilly, will receive 50Mb broadband through existing electricity poles.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin, said: "We're already bringing broadband speeds of up to 50Mb and, soon 100Mb, to over half of all UK homes and are pushing the boundaries to ensure that homes right across the UK benefit from ultrafast broadband."
