Virgin Media to measure fibre optic speed
Friday 24th July 2009, by Daniel King
Fibre optic broadband services provided by Virgin Media are to be measured to find out how fast they really are.
The company announced this week it has appointed the partner of communications watchdog Ofcom, SamKnows, to undertake this task, which is due to last for 12 months.
Virgin Media claims to provide customers with "ultrafast" broadband that is the speediest in the UK at up to 50Mb.
The project will involve the cooperation of 750 households in what is being described as a "pioneering initiative". Each connection will be repeatedly analysed to determine what these consumers receive.
Jon James is executive director of broadband at Virgin Media and said the company is committed to improving services and the reason SamKnows was chosen was because of its accurate and reliable data.
Moreover, SamKnows' chairman Alex Salter said the publication of the government's Digital Britain report had brought advertised and actual speeds to the forefront of everyone's minds.
"Now is the ideal time for broadband providers to take a long, hard look at their services to ensure customers are getting what their broadband packages promise," he remarked.
"In a pioneering step, Virgin Media is proactively looking to assess itself to make sure its customers are getting value for money."
Meanwhile, earlier this week saw Virgin chief Sir Richard Branson applaud the England cricket team for their Ashes performance. The company is currently running a campaign involving it donating £1,000 to charity each time a half-century is achieved by a batsman on the squad.
