Virgin Media to step up broadband service
Tuesday 23rd October 2007, by Daniel King
Multimedia provider Virgin Media has announced it is to concentrate on its high speed broadband market after failing to break BSkyB's stranglehold on the digital TV sector.
After launching last year as a replacement for the NTL and Telewest companies, Virgin Media has attempted to become the market leader in the quad-play market, by offering digital TV, broadband, home phone and mobile services.
However, the company has now admitted it has failed to break into the digital TV market as planned and will now step up its broadband services instead, in an attempt to win customers.
Acting chief executive Neil Berkett said Virgin intends to promote its faster speeds in order to take customers from Carphone Warehouse and Sky.
Mr Berkett told the Guardian: "Despite our technical advantage we are still not really standing out from the crowd. I really do want to re-focus our energies onto the broadband platform."
Virgin Media is currently the second largest broadband provider in the UK, behind BT, according to figures from ISP Review.
