Virgin proposes 200 mbps broadband
Tuesday 29th July 2008, by Daniel King
Virgin Media has reiterated its goal of dramatically boosting its broadband speeds over the next four years.
It intends to offer 50 mbps broadband in the coming year, rising to 200 mbps by 2012 if demand is forthcoming.
The company said it is installing DOCSIS 3.0 transmission technology across its network. It is also moving cable television customers to digital by the end of 2009 in order to free up capacity.
"We are trying to build a market here for high speed broadband. That market doesn't exist yet in the UK," Howard Watson, Virgin's chief technical officer, told Reuters.
"We are setting ourselves a vision of households using 200Mbit by 2012"
Last week, David Payne, of the Institute of Advanced Telecommunications at Swansea University, predicted that broadband usage could grow by up to 100 times by 2018.
