Virgin targets students with flexible package

Wednesday 8th September 2010, by Daniel King

Virgin Broadband has launched a new nine-month package ideal for students during term-time.

The shorter contract period could also be ideal for short-term tenants and those who are frequently on the move for work reasons.

Monthly prices will begin at £20 a month for speeds of up to 10Mbps, while the faster speed package with a connection of up to 20Mbps begins at £30.

However, subscribers will be able to claim a £10 discount for the first two months.

Combining their broadband contract with an £11.99 monthly Virgin phone line means that subscribers get the faster broadband connection for only £20 for nine months.

In addition to this, students who have a valid NUS card will not have to pay an activation charge of £20.

The broadband provider's announcement of the package follows O2's recent decision to launch a monthly contract.

Subscribers have to pay a one-off charge, but could make considerable savings as they only have to renew monthly.

Recent research has revealed that while broadband uptake is at its highest, many people feel that they have to lump unsuitable packages.

A survey by O2 found that 62 per cent of consumers wanted customised bundles, the price of which reflects their actual broadband consumption.
