'Free' mobile broadband comes to the UK

Tuesday 22nd July 2008, by Daniel King

Vodafone and Sony Ericsson have announced a joint initiative to make high-speed mobile broadband more affordable to businesses.

The two companies hope to deliver cheaper built-in technology across the entire range of upcoming Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks.

From August, the 3G notebooks will cost the same price as those laptops that do not have the technology.

Using Sony Ericsson's built-in modules for mobile broadband, customers will be able to purchase new ThinkPad notebooks in the performance T and ultraportable X Series.

End users, who can connect to the internet by accessing Vodafone's mobile broadband service, will receive a 30-day free trial from Vodafone.

Alec Howard, head of PC connectivity at Vodafone, said: "It's a real free trial, with no commitment. The connection manager will ask for your name and email, but no bank details."

Lenovo designed the ThinkPad SL notebooks for the small-to-medium business users who rely on round-the-clock connectivity.
