The new Dell Inspiron Mini 9 will give mobile broadband customers much greater functionality, according to Vodafone.

From mid-October the compact device, which has mobile broadband connectivity built in, will be available from the operator's website and shops.

The Inspiron Mini 9, which weighs just over 1kg, has an 8.9-inch display, sealed keyboard, Bluetooth and webcam.

It does not need a USB modem, as mobile broadband connectivity software is pre-installed and the device comes with a SIM.

Vodafone is the first network operator in the UK to offer the Dell device, which will be available free for customers who agree to take out a 24-month contract.

Nick Read, Vodafone UK's chief executive officer, said that the Inspiron Mini 9 would prove to be an ideal product for those who need to access the internet on the move, as it comes with a large screen "without compromising portability".

"Customers can now use a single device to log on and access their emails, read the latest news headlines, or update their blog or social networking page as they travel home from work on the train or while they take a break for coffee," added Mr Read.

Earlier this month Vodafone began selling the Blackberry Bold smartphone - the first Blackberry compatible with the network's mobile broadband service.

The Bold, which comes with built-in Wi-Fi capability and allows users to access emails and edit Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, is available free to customers who take out a £35-a-month two-year Anytime 600 contract.
