Irish SMEs going mobile for broadband

Irish SMEs going mobile for broadband Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in Ireland are increasingly utilising wireless broadband connections, research has shown.

A study conducted by Vodafone Ireland highlights that a third of SMEs in the country have now found a high-speed alternative to their fixed lines in the form of mobile broadband such as WiFi and 3G to access services.

However, the findings show that a fifth of Irish businesses are still using dial-up connections to get on the web.

"We expect to see more SMEs moving away from traditional slow or inflexible means of connecting to the internet and becoming fully mobile," commented Eavann Murphy, head of business marketing for Vodafone Ireland.

The firm also discovered that where larger companies are concerned, seven per cent no longer use any sort of fixed connection at all.

A cross-market collaboration is currently being examined by Nortel and Urban Wimax to provide deliverability of 4G mobile services in markets where 3G technology is already commonplace.
