Virgin Media offers wireless security tips

Friday 11th April 2008, by Daniel King

Broadband supplier Virgin Media has released a series of tips for those with wireless connections, to help prevent security issues.

Advice includes creating a longer password for wireless broadband connections, which will be harder for others to crack and thus invade the account.

It was also suggested that a 'whitelist' of permitted devices is created for the router, preventing unauthorised access, as well as checking the level of security being used with the connection.

Howard Watson, chief technology officer at Virgin Media, explained: "Wireless routers can be complicated to setup and therefore potentially vulnerable to attack."

Mr Watson added that choosing a product with high security, as well as following the issues tips, can prevent any unwanted usage.

Customers were also advised that checking the connection logs, which can be found on the wireless router, can ascertain if the connection has been broken into.

Virgin Media recently appointed Hollywood actor Samuel L Jackson to front a new advertising campaign for Virgin television services.
