Vodafone 'may be mulling four-play broadband package'

Friday 4th February 2011, by Daniel King

Vodafone UK may be preparing to launch a quad play broadband, home phone, mobile and television service in the near future, according to a "credible source".

Speaking to ISPreview.co.uk, the source said such a move would put Vodafone back into direct competition with providers such as Virgin Media and BT.

According to the "normally very reliable insider source", Vodafone is working on the new service with BT Wholesale, and while broader details are yet to emerge, the offering is expected to be a quad play solution in the mould of BTVision-style bundles.

It is not the first time the operator has tried to launch something like this; the Vodafone At Home service, which was launched at the end of 2006, offered a fixed-line home service together with an 8Mbps broadband connection.

However, this product has been taken off the market to new customers recently, though some customers are still using it.

"It's worth pointing out that Vodafone Spain also recently announced their new Vodafone Internet TV service and any UK solution is expected to be very similar," commented ISPreview.co.uk.

And while the news may be exciting for broadband users looking to switch to an all-in-one package, the website stressed that the service has not been confirmed by any official sources.

Meanwhile, Virgin Media will kick off a new ad campaign this weekend focusing on its fibre optic broadband, next-generation cable TV and mobile services.

"Our new campaign celebrates the integral role technology plays as part of life today," said Richard Larcombe, advertising and sponsorship director at Virgin Media.

"People are using more services, devices and gadgets more of the time and Virgin Media is helping families lead a limitless digital life."

The company will be hoping to build on the success it enjoyed at the start of this year, after a survey named it as the UK's fastest broadband company.
