Vodafone trials new product to boost mobile coverage

Businesses and households in areas of low mobile broadband coverage might welcome the latest product trial from Vodafone.
The provider is running tests on a new device that could help improve network performance and enhance 3G mobile signals within areas of homes and offices that receive low coverage.
Initial trials in Vodafone Egypt recorded a substantial improvement in connectivity and trials are now underway in a number of markets across the world to identify the potential of the product.
Andy MacLeod, global networks director at Vodafone, said the trials are part of the firm's commitment to enhancing mobile broadband experience for its customers.
"This product may help to improve performance in areas where customers may experience isolated spots of low coverage within the home or small office," he commented.
"Initial results are encouraging and we are now looking to get wider feedback from a broader set of customers."
The product uses a powered booster box and small antenna to amplify existing 3G signals and boost reception within the surrounding area.
Businesses or homeowners are then able to position the antenna wherever reception is strongest, while the booster is placed wherever the improved range is required.
This latest tests come after Vodafone announced the successful trial of new HSPA+ MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology designed to further improve its mobile broadband offering.
The company achieved speeds of more than 20Mbps, which it claimed was "another key milestone" in the development of 3G mobile broadband technology.
