3's 3G sites 'taking mobile broadband to more people'

By Tim Bisley (Mon, 1st February 2010)

People searching for a handset which can support mobile broadband use may opt for a device from 3 after learning that the network offers the most comprehensive 3G network in Britain.

Mobile operator 3 has activated its 10,000th 3G site in Shooters Hill, south-east London, which will add to what is already the UK's most extensive system.

The site was connected in order to bring an improved and stronger 3G signal to the densely-populated part of the capital.

It went live on Friday (January 29th) and is one of hundreds that have been set up by the telecommunications company over the last month.

Mobile broadband users could see reliable and fast 3G connections as the key factor when deciding which provider to sign up with.

Graham Baxter, chief technology officer at 3, said: "Over the past two years the continued growth of internet communications, smartphone use and mobile broadband uptake have brought the need for good 3G network coverage into sharp focus for millions of consumers."

With 3's coverage already reaching 93 per cent of the UK population, Mr Baxter's revelation that the company intends to take its total number of 3Gs sites past the 13,000 mark in 2010 could mean it is set to become available to almost everybody.

Mobile broadband users who develop issues with their technology may also be in the best hands with 3, which plans to operate a more consumer-friendly policy in the future.

Last week software company Basekit suggested that the recent launch of the Apple iPad will result in a significant rise in interest in mobile broadband-enabled devices.
