4G London broadband trial launched by 02

Tuesday 15th November 2011, by Daniel King

O2 has begun a trial of 4G broadband, which will give people a look at the latest mobile internet technologies that could be seen in future broadband deals.

The trial will run for nine months and will give hundreds of consumers, businesses and venue owners the latest 4G technology. Overall, more than 25 sites will obtain the services, spread across a combined area of 40 sq km.

This network will span from Hyde Park to The O2 in Greenwich and has been engineered to cover integral areas of London, such as Canary Wharf, Soho, Kings Cross and Westminster.

Services that will be accessible thanks to the new technology include high-speed corporate LAN access, high-definition film and music streaming, mobile online gaming and high-speed access to social networks.

As a result, the time to download a 500MB file could be as quick as less than one minute, marking a significant increase on 3G's time of five minutes.

O2 will ensure that trialists are adequately prepared for the initiative by providing them with mobile broadband dongles that support speeds of up to 100Mbps.

It is expected that more than 1,000 people will participate in the project, including staff at John Lewis, Enterprise Nation and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Ronan Dunne, chief executive officer of Telefonica UK (O2), said: "O2 has been at the heart of the mobile data explosion over the last three years and our priority has always been to build ahead of the curve.

"Our work in London will give us a better understanding of the capabilities of 4G technology and will allow us to explore the superfast benefits it will bring to people and industry across the UK."

While O2 puts its trial into motion, Sunderland is looking ahead to a bright future in regards to broadband, after its council announced that it will be the first city to offer broadband deals to 90 per cent of homes and businesses.
