Birmingham to get 4G wireless broadband network?

Monday 11th July 2011, by Daniel King

Birmingham City Council is hoping to introduce city-wide superfast mobile broadband and is seeking a private sector broadband provider to help deliver the project.

City councillors are set to consider the proposals laid out in a report today, which recommends introducing a 4G wireless that would be a major boost for local residents and businesses.

Councillors responsible for drawing up the plans are confident that by taking the lead, the local authority will be able to maximise opportunities for local businesses and residents.

Chair of the Digital Birmingham partnership Paul Tilsley explained: "It isn't about the council becoming a mobile phone or network operator, it's about teaming up with organisations that have the know-how, so we can bring 4G to Birmingham as soon as possible along with a commercial benefit for the city."

Meanwhile, Ofcom is hopeful that it can use FM radio spectrum freed up in the future to improve rural broadband delivery.

The regulator is currently trialling white space devices, which use radio spectrums to deliver internet connectivity.
