Brits: We want in-car Wi-Fi

Friday 30th April 2010, by Daniel King

Just have a think about your next family holiday for a minute and imagine the racket your kids are going to be making in the back of your car as you drive for hours in the sweltering heat of [insert foreign country here].

Because they're bored, tired and have nothing to do.

However, take the time now to imagine what it would be like if they had access to the internet while you're on the road.

Peaceful, isn't it?

Well, it could soon become a reality for many, as 3 UK is to make its In-car Wi-Fi service - launched at the Gadget Show in Birmingham at the start of April - available from May 1st.

This will include a Mi-Fi wireless modem, a mains charger, a windscreen holder and an in-car charger and will give people the chance to connect their laptops, smartphones, portable games consoles - and so on - to the web while on the move.

And it would appear the technology is going to take off, if research by the firm is anything to go by.

3 UK revealed 71 per cent of Brits would find the service useful for work and entertaining when travelling, while 34 per cent would use In-car Wi-Fi for social media purposes.

Commenting on the findings of the survey, Charlotte Blanchard, director of products and services at the company, said: "We can all relate to the woes of long car trips and we're always looking at new products and services that connect our customers while on the move."

"In-car Wi-Fi does this, allowing mobile workers to check traffic information and email en route to a meeting, while kids can get on Facebook, watch TV online or download tracks to an iPod Touch while on a road trip."

Would like to have Wi-Fi in your car?
