Broadband popularity spreads to the mobile market

Broadband popularity spreads to the mobile market Mobile phone network 3 has announced its first foray into the mobile broadband sector by offering the cheapest service on the market.

Tariffs, to be launched as '3 Turbo', will offer a mobile modem with a speed of up to 2.8 Mbit/s with prices starting from £10 per month.

The mobile broadband market has started a pricing war among the mobile operators, who are looking to beat the traditional ISPs with their range of tariffs. Currently, Vodafone and T-Mobile are the most popular mobile broadband providers, with prices starting from £25 per month.

Yesterday, a report by industry regulators Ofcom found that mobile 3G networks are helping spread the popularity of wireless internet. It found that High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is creating a link between ISPs and mobile broadband providers.

The report said that HSDPA enables "mobile operators to offer download speeds comparable to those typically experienced by residential broadband consumers".
