Broadband users given speed-boosting tips

British broadband users who want to achieve a smoother browsing experience have been given some speed-boosting tips.

And it seems like the advice is pretty timely.

According to recent research by Consumer Choices, 30 per cent of respondents said they're unhappy with their broadband speed, rising from 27 per cent the year before.

In addition, it found that a further 28 per cent are planning on doing something about it and switch internet service providers.

Commenting on the findings, Michael Phillips, product director at the organisation said: "The steady increase in speed dissatisfaction is indicative that consumers are taking advantage of access to online content that places more demand on their internet connection but as ISPs advertise - and consumers subscribe to - ever faster services, their expectations are failing to be met."

So how do we make that video load faster?

Or make sure that Facebook page loads before the boss notices?

Well, according to Moneywise writer Esther Shaw, the first thing to do is reposition the router, if you're on a wireless connection, somewhere where the signal will not be affected by obstructions and interference like walls and other electrical appliances.

What's more, we need to make sure any unnecessary applications aren't running in the background when we log into our computer.

This reduces "both your bandwidth overhead and connection speed".

Password protecting your wireless network is also a good idea, she explained, as people sharing your connection can take up bandwidth as well as cause a security threat.

Finally, upgrading your browser and avoiding peak times of the day to head online may also considerably improve the speed with which you are able to surf the web.
