Broadband users 'trust holiday reviews like a friend'

Broadband users surfing the web to take advantage of the many online facilities for booking a holiday are likely to see certain websites as "a trusted friend", one expert has suggested.
According to a spokeswoman for TripAdvisor, a company that operates a number of branded resources that form part of a network of tourism-related portals, the internet now plays an important role in many people's decisions.
Amelie Hurst explained sites offering reviews and details of what to do in other countries were particularly useful for holidaymakers and were often seen as "akin to getting advice from a trusted friend".
The expert added that there was no shortage of places for broadband users to visit online where they could find the information they need and the "wealth" of opinions from others who have experienced certain destinations can help with issues such as accommodation, where to eat and much more.
In addition, Ms Hurst said this was likely to remain the case as travellers "have an increasing desire to share their own experiences through review sites it's the modern day equivalent of returning from a holiday and calling up your friends to tell them all about it".
A recent survey published by Thomson and First Choice found that 80 per cent of people say they trust the reviews they read online, while one fifth of respondents say they might remain sceptical for one of three reasons.
The first of these is they expect reviews only to be written by people looking to complain and the second is that people have very different quality standards. The third was that the article may be written by those with an interest in the related organisation.
