Broadband users urged to protect Wi-Fi connections

Friday 7th May 2010, by Daniel King

It would appear that taking the steps to protect your wireless broadband networks is as important as ever.

These days the worry is no longer neighbours slowing down your surfing speed or tipping you over the edge of your download limit by logging on to your connection.

No, nowadays you could end up the victim of some pretty serious cyber crime.

According to various reports in the media, there has been a rise in the number of Wi-Fi-cracking kits being sold online in China, which include USB adapters, a Linux operating system, password-breaking software and a detailed instruction booklet.

Scary stuff.

What's more, new research from Symantec has shown there has been an increase in the amount of web-based crime - such as malicious software programming, spam, attack toolkits and targeted threats - taking place during the recession.

So what do we do to make sure our networks are protected?

Well, Simon Pamplin, systems engineer pre-sales manager for UK and Ireland for Brocade, explained there are now loads of things we should try to put in place to secure our connections.

"Wireless [internet], because its so widespread in nature, means you have to layer on various levels of security – you need firewall identification, the identification of rogue access points and you layer on top access controls such as radio syndication and VPN tunnelling between points," he said.

He added: "You'll also have denial of service capability, location-based security is just another thing that's happening on top of that."

How do you secure your wireless network?
