Darlington 'set to become free wireless hotspot'
Tuesday 18th September 2007, by Daniel King
Residents in the town of Darlington are set to be one of the first in the UK to have access to free wireless broadband, thanks to a new partnership.
Balfour Webnet Limited (BWL) has signed a deal with Darlington Football Club to pilot a new 20 Mb wireless connection across the town, ISP Review reports.
Darlington Football Club will be the first football club in the country to offer wireless broadband and telephone internet services to homes and businesses using the very latest world standard of WiMax technology.
Schools and hospitals in the area are set to receive free or heavily subsidised wireless services within the coming weeks, with a residential package in the new year.
Ken Little, chief executive of Balfour Webnet, said: "This wireless technology has valuable spin-offs, with wireless surveillance products for home and community safety."
A number of towns and cities across the UK have considered total wireless connection, with Norwich becoming the first to roll-out connection across its city centre last summer.
