Google property site 'could be a hit'
Thursday 3rd December 2009, by Daniel King
The launch of an online property portal from the world's most popular search engine would be a big hit with broadband users across the UK, if one expert's comments are to be believed.
Although an official announcement has yet to be made, it has been widely reported this week Google is currently in the process of putting together a web-based property portal that could be up in the early part of next year.
The move would follow the launch of a similar service that made its debut in 2009 serving Australian broadband users who wanted to list their homes free of charge.
Selwyn Lim, director of Mouseprice, has since commented on the reports, noting Google's plans could prove to be successful thanks to the sheer scale of the brand in comparison to firms that would be considered rivals.
"The level of traffic that Rightmove delivers at the moment, very few portals can match that. With Google coming into the UK as anticipated over the next year, it adds another question mark over whether Rightmove can continue ramping up their prices as they have been doing," he said.
Mr Lim also noted the difference this would make to the housing market could be significant for both consumers and estate agents, because it would introduce more competition.
This week, Google launched a new-look homepage designed to be simpler and more uncluttered. The page now fades in slowly, opening with the logo, before revealing the search box and buttons.
