Hull's broadband users 'going mobile'

Tuesday 30th September 2008, by Daniel King

Broadband users in Hull are going mobile in order to cut costs, it has been claimed.

The suggestion was made by The Carphone Warehouse, which stated that people were unhappy about the prices charged by local network provider Kingston Communications.

Michael Readings, manager of The Carphone Warehouse's Hull shop, said some local residents had complained about a lack of choice because they are unable to take advantage of the broadband deals offered by Virgin Media and TalkTalk.

Many have now responded by signing up for mobile broadband deals, reports the Hull Daily Mail.

The Carphone Warehouse in the city has seen a 200 per cent rise in the sale of broadband dongles in the last quarter.

Network operators and shops across the country have seen significant growth in sales of similar products in recent months, but the increase in Hull is more than four times the national average.

"We have seen mobile broadband sales go through the roof recently, showing that our customers and the residents of Hull want not only more choice in their broadband provider, but are also looking for better value," said Mr Readings.

T-Mobile recently launched a range of pay-as-you-go-style mobile broadband plans.

The deals allow users who purchase a T-Mobile Mobile Broadband USB Stick 110, which is available for £49.99, to get a day's unlimited browsing for £2. One week costs £10 and a 30-day package is priced at £20.

Vodafone will step up its bid to win a greater share of the mobile broadband market next month by offering a free Dell Inspiron Mini 9 to people who sign up to a 24-month contract.
