Improved security 'necessary' for wireless users

Tuesday 23rd October 2007, by Daniel King

Wireless broadband users have been urged to update the security settings on their devices in order to stop attacks on their systems.

While the default settings on a laptop or Blackberry enable wireless broadband users to access sites safely, the threat of intruders into systems should spur users into better defending against attacks, the National Computing Centre (NCC) has said.

By changing passwords and SSID codes, potential thieves can be stopped from stealing personal information, the NCC's Michael Dean suggested. Mr Dean added that an internet security expert should be consulted if queries arise.

Mr Dean stated: "Most people who use wireless technologies probably use the settings that came with it when it was supplied. But those may not be appropriate to your organisation. There are some organisations that are dealing with particularly sensitive data, whether that's financial or whatever, which needs to be protected."

Earlier this week, broadband experts claimed that wireless security systems at many hotspots across the UK were "broken", the BBC reported.
