London welcomes new wireless zone

London welcomes new wireless zone City workers switched on their laptops, PDAs and smart phones to a free wireless broadband connection this morning.

The Wi-Fi system, which is free for the first month, is Europe's most dense and will serve the 350,000-strong population who work in the City of London's Square Mile.

Built by broadband provider Cloud and mobile phone giant Nokia, the network does not rely on any specially built masts as users receive signals from street furniture such as lamp posts and street signs.

Michael Snyder, chairman of the City of London's policy committee, said: "The City of London is the world's leading financial and business centre and has always benefited from a world class communications infrastructure.

"The Square Mile is a fast-moving, dynamic environment and we are responding to the increasing time pressures faced by City workers by providing the technology for them to stay up to date, wherever they are in the City."

London's Canary Wharf and Leicester Square have also been subject to small-scale wireless trials but the City network is by far the most comprehensive seen in the UK.
