Mobile broadband vs. fixed-line services

A new guide has been published for consumers that attempts to educate on what the benefits and pitfalls of mobile broadband are.
In a piece for This Is Money, Tara Evans said some of the differences between a fixed-line service and the portable option relate to the individual needs of the user.
She said mobile broadband has "revolutionised" the way in which people can access the internet while on the move and the technology can also provide a solution for students, those in rental properties or people who live in remote areas.
In order to define the product, Ms Evans said consumers should think of it as something that "lets you access the internet from your laptop almost anywhere", but is also something that can be utilised via mobile phones and PCs via a dongle or wireless hotspot.
When it comes to deciding between a fixed and portable broadband service, the expert suggested consumers consider how many people are going to use the connection, as well as how fast it needs to be.
She added the latter option will provide homes without a landline access to the internet, but explained such a system would not offer the same kind of downloading abilities.
"You will get slower speeds [with mobile] compared to a fixed line," Ms Evans said. "If you're looking for a connection to download with or where it will be used by more than one person at a time, then a fixed line may be the best option."
Mobile broadband operators in the UK include Orange, T-Mobile, O2 and 3.
