Mobile phone re-use preferred to recycling, expert says

People who are considering whether to recycle their mobile broadband-enabled handsets should instead see re-use as the first option, a specialist asserts.

However, recycling remains key to the environment and more than 27 million mobile phones were sold in the UK last year, which could equate to around 3,500 tonnes of electrical waste, according to a representative from Envirofone.

Jon Butler, creative brand manager at Envirofone, said: "We're proud to say that, together with our customers, we’ve recycled 1.5 million phones in the last year.

"But when you take into account that there are an estimated 80 million mobile phones in circulation, we’re only scratching the surface. UK households could certainly try to be greener."

Research from Juniper Research recently found that the mobile entertainment market will expand by 15 per cent this year, suggesting that more people will be faced with the option of either re-using or recycling their handset.
