A community of 15 monks on Caldey Island, off the coast of Pembrokeshire, have had wireless broadband internet installed after tiring of dial-up.

The Cistercian brothers sell homemade sweets and perfume over the internet in order to sustain their community.

Their internet shop has seen turnover increase by 100 per cent over the past five years but the slow nature of dial-up was beginning to hamper business.

Father Daniel, who is the abbot of Caldey Abbey, said: "Patience is one of the characteristics of monastic life, but even the patience of the brothers was being tested by our slow, dial-up internet service."

The monks' broadband service is being transmitted to Caldey Island from the Welsh mainland.

Jonathan England, from TFL Group, said he is "absolutely delighted" to have been able to provide the religious community with state-of-the-art broadband access.

Monks have occupied the island since the sixth century.
