New technology 'does away with need for Wi-Fi hotspots'

Mobile broadband fans could be set to benefit from brand new technology recently released by a start-up firm from Sweden.

Anyfi Networds has announced the released of Anyfi.net, which combines internet protocol with Wi-Fi to separate logical network and physical infrastructure.

It explained it works a bit like how voice over internet protocol - Skype for example - breaks ties between phone services and the physical phone line.

Sound confusing?

If so, I should probably stick to the proposed basic benefits of the technology - said to be less like Wi-Fi and more like 4G.

The company's chief executive officer Bjorn Smedman, stated: "Until now Wi-Fi hotspots have been difficult to use and inherently insecure. Our solution works with any Wi-Fi device out of the box and provides fully automatic [Wi-Fi Protected Access] security"

He added: "Our cloud based matchmaking service keeps track of each device's favourite network and makes sure it is available from the closest access point.

"By forwarding the raw Wi-Fi radio traffic over the internet we can ensure security, even if an attacker is in control of the access point."

And the innovation could assist internet service providers, as well as consumers keen to speed up their connections while on the move.

That's because Anyfi Networks - which started work on the product back in 2006 - noted fixed-line broadband suppliers could become a mobile operator quick-as-a-flash, just be updating its modem software.

Furthermore, smaller companies can join together and jump on the mobile broadband bandwagon too.
