Next-generation wireless broadband networks that are more efficient and less expensive could soon be implemented, according to a new study.
A survey by ICT Results found that European researchers have found a way to enhance wireless broadband networks with the use of cost-effective relay stations that boost signals.
Known as the Fireworks project, fourth generation broadband wireless can be delivered to densely-populated cities and remote communities.
Relay stations are much smaller than base stations and can be fixed onto existing infrastructure such as lamp posts, remarked Fireworks manager Dr Antonis Valkanas.
He continued: "They also should only cost around one-fifth of the price, as the intelligence is in the base station and ... do not require a directed backhaul connection to the internet."
Meanwhile, Analysys Mason has published a report predicting there will be 2.1 billion wireless broadband customers around the world by 2015.
