Ofcom announces fourth spectrum auction

Ofcom announces fourth spectrum auction Telecoms regulator Ofcom has announced plans to hold a fourth auction of radio spectrum licences next year.

The auction will be for spectrum bands between ten and 40 Ghz, which could be suitable for those looking to make use of broadband with high capacity, according to Ofcom.

It stated that these bands also mean that the user will be able to transfer a significant volume of data across distances measuring up to 12 km.

Ofcom also indicated that the auction will be advantageous for consumers by releasing spectrum that has gone unused.

"This will benefit consumers by providing access to new services, greater choice and competition. It will also benefit the economy," it said in a statement.

Last week, the body outlined its plans for the use of wireless spectrum at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

It will be used for wireless camera video links, handheld radios and audio links, among other purposes.
