One in six fail to protect their wireless router

One in six fail to protect their wireless router Recent research has found that one in six people do not adequately protect their wireless router.

Money Supermarket found that further to this, over one in ten people admitted that they had engaged in a practice known as 'piggybacking' - hijacking someone else's Wi-Fi connection - in the last twelve months, reports ISP Review.

In addition to the security issues surrounding this, there are also legal problems that could arise as a result.

Of those polled, 12 per cent stated that they had downloaded music and films using someone else's Wi-Fi. However, if any legal issues arose, the responsibility would be that of the person in charge of the connection.

Broadband subscribers who have caps on the amount of usage, such as those on Plusnet, could find that their connection slows considerably as someone else uses up the high-speed broadband allowance.

Plusnet's internet connection starts at £6.99 each month, for which users get up to 8 MB speeds with an allowance of 1 GB each month.
