Report forecasts boom in wireless broadband

Wednesday 30th July 2008, by Daniel King

Wireless broadband services will create "significant opportunities" for revenue growth, according to a new report from Analysys Mason.

By 2015, 2.1 billion wireless broadband customers around the world will generate $784 billion (£392 billion) in revenue, an increase of about 2,400 per cent.

This growth will be underpinned by improvements in handsets, ongoing developments in wireless technologies and flexible pricing options.

According to the report, HSPA will support 88 per cent of all wireless broadband consumers by the end of this year.

"Despite the increasing availability of LTE and WiMax, HSPA and HSPA+ will still support 54 per cent of wireless broadband users by the end of 2015," according to Dr Mark Heath, co-author of the report.

Earlier this week, Manchester council announced that it hopes to extend its Eastserve wireless broadband service across the city.

Established in 2000, the Eastserve project was set up to serve east Manchester, which had a shortage of copper cabling.
